Start 3D Modeling in Digital Clay Today - FREE !!!

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 22, 2011, 2:06 AM
Hi friends! : )

As artists I presume at some point in life each of us dabbled at least in creating real world objects out of clay, and a few of us took that much farther of course getting into lost wax and bronze castings and stone carvings etcetera.

These days though it has become so incredibly easy to create 3d models in various "digital clay modeling" programs such as zbrush or mudbox or sculptris or meshmixer, that every artist among us truly should have this capability in our creative toolboxes, even if only to dabble in it occasionally, especially given that both Sculptris and Meshmixer are completely free of charge, even for commercial work!

Both Sculptris and Meshmixer allow one to import and export industry standard ".OBJ" format mesh objects, and these days that means you have access instantly to hundreds of thousands of free meshes to start with as base meshes to radically alter in these programs, let alone the fact that all commercial 3D Printing companies worldwide accept OBJ format digital mesh submissions to use in their creation of a finished real world 3d model replica composed of materials from plastic to platinum!

If you don't have Sculptris, do yourself a favor, click below here and get it now and play with it!  It is a download link at the end of the very first forum thread on this page:

And !!!!!!!!!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meshmixer 4.0 has just been released (also free) with great new toolsets similar to Sculptris, but most important of all, now Meshmixer performs dynamic mesh tessellation just like Sculptris does!!! Awesome meshes with varying degrees of complexity are now auto-created on the fly without the 3d artist being required to pay close attention to mesh density at all !

Grab the new free Meshmixer 4.0 here: www.meshmixer.com/

After many many years of 3d modeling work myself, I can highly recommend both these programs as absolutely fun and easy and indispensable for artistic fun with 3d!

Enjoy my friends, and let me know how you like them both!

appreciate you sharing the info but for me the sculptris download link on that page doesn't work (says damaged or unknown archive, it was only 64kb), I downloaded Meshmixer but for some reason it doesn't work on my Win XP Home SP3 system
"meshmixer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
AppName: meshmixer.exe ModName: msvcr100.dll

May be a plugin or something I'm missing or maybe it's not compatible with my video card, looked like a cool prog though

Hmmm, I would try that download again on Sculptris, I have heard of that happening from that same link but repeated downloads eventual;ly resulted in a non corrupt transfer for some people. In my own case I have downloaded it from that link 3 times successfully with no file corruption at all. I presume it is an intermittant problem with the ZBrush Central forum hardware server, not the file itself nor your system.

as for the meshmixer incompatibility, the fact that it refers you to msvcr100.dll tells me that the issue there is in fact an incompatibility between your graphics card capabilities and the pixel shader version demands of the program. I used to have a non-pixel shader2 capable graphics card that often resulted in that very same message with new high-end graphics application installs, and only a newer card (or different manufacturer) I believe will resolve that issue unfortunately.

You may want to tell the folks at meshmixer.com about the incompatibility, perhaps they have an alternate solution or workaround in the works, and it would be worth the effort! : )

Also, just a thought.... I have been attacked in the past by Trojan Horse programs that specifically overwrite that same "msvcr100.dll" as well as "msvcrt.dll" and you may want to look at the precise file size and date of your versions of each of those and compare each to the latest versions available free at Microsoft or another trusted download site online. Each of those apps is vital to graphics performance and are often the target of malicious software overwrites since they are so large they tend to offer hackers a place to insert malicious code in an otherwise trusted system file.

thanks for the reply, I've tried several times, it always ends up being a 64kb zip file that's corrupted, I even googled it to find other links and none of them worked either, one of them even redirected back to that link :p No big deal as I have Zbrush I got for my B-day a couple of years ago, just haven't really messed with it but seeing your stuff has inspired me to re-install it again :)
